Building Data Centers the Right Way
Planning and constructing a data center is a significant undertaking, and success depends heavily on choosing a partner with real expertise across strategic planning, construction, and ongoing operations. Proton approaches every data center project as a true end-to-end solution provider — involved from initial concept all the way through to day-to-day operation.
Data Center Design & Construction
A data center has to do more than just look good on paper — its design must align with real business requirements, deliver the infrastructure needed to support those requirements, and remain practical for the IT teams who manage it day to day. As the operational core of most organizations, a data center demands thoughtful design and solid construction to ensure it truly serves the business it supports.
Proton acts as a hands-on, collaborative partner, giving clients access to deep expertise across the entire data center infrastructure supply chain. Our data center engineering team specializes in delivering turnkey solutions — from small and mid-sized facilities to large, centralized global data centers — covering the full range of electromechanical systems, including:
Power Supply Systems
Reliable, uninterrupted power is the single most critical factor in any data center — it’s the reason data centers are engineered the way they are. Best practice calls for two independent power routes, each running through its own transformer. Power flows from a substation through an automatic transfer switch (with a backup diesel generator connected), and then into UPS units equipped with their own dedicated battery modules.
Data Center Cooling Systems
Proton implements advanced chiller technology built for mission-critical environments, along with Precision Close Control Air Conditioning (CRAC) units designed specifically for data center use. We deploy a full range of cooling solutions — including room-level cooling technologies that conserve energy and water while keeping deployment simple. Cooling is one of the most essential elements of any data center. The industry standard approach uses raised flooring combined with alternating cold and hot aisles, with cold aisles enclosed to prevent hot and cold air from mixing.
Smart Power Distribution Units (PDUs)
A rack-mounted power distribution unit provides multiple outlets to reliably deliver power to networking equipment housed within a rack — including servers, storage devices, and other critical hardware.
High-Density Server Racks
Purpose-built steel and electronic framework racks designed to securely house servers, networking devices, cabling, and other essential data center equipment.
Raised Access Flooring
An elevated structural floor built above the solid substrate, creating a concealed space beneath for routing mechanical and electrical services out of sight and out of the way.
Structured Cabling
A well-designed data center relies on standards-based structured cabling to deliver both functionality and scalability — keeping the door open for current equipment needs as well as future expansion.
Fire Alarm & Fire Suppression
Data centers need fire detection and suppression systems that act fast, protecting critical assets and keeping business operations running. Proton’s specialists design, install, and maintain fire safety systems tailored to your facility — including compatibility with modern aisle containment strategies.
Our fire suppression approaches include:
- Clean Agent — Automatically releases a clean suppression agent into the room and/or under-floor space once a set number of detectors are triggered.
- Sprinkler Systems — Available as either a wet system (pipes continuously filled with water) or a pre-action system (pipes stay dry until a fire is detected, triggering water flow).
- Water Mist — A modern approach that atomizes water into a fine, non-conductive mist capable of suppressing fire without the water damage associated with traditional systems.
